Chapter Fifteen

Dave met Nancy and me at the Queen Street subway station, and we travelled home together. I noticed Dave staring a little too long at Nancy, which bugged me. Did Dave have a roaming eye? I thought Nancy was too young for him. She was twenty-one, and Dave was a year older than me at thirty-three.

I was distracted from my thoughts when Dave asked, “What’s going on? Why were you adamant I escort you home?”

Nancy and I looked at each other, and then I said, “Two women from our office have been murdered. The police think there’s a serial killer, and they suggested we don’t walk home alone.”

“Wow!” Dave’s eyes grew large. “Do they have a suspect?”

“No.” Nancy shuddered.

“I can walk you home every night,” assured Dave. He turned to Nancy and asked, “Do you get off at St. Clair, too?”

“Yes,” she replied. “My building is just a block from the station, two blocks away from Becki’s place.”

“Becki?” asked Dave. “Oh, Rebecca, I didn’t know you liked being called Becki.”

I frowned. “I don’t.”

He was a bit taken back by my brevity. I saw his brow furrow, and creases showed up on his forehead. He appeared to be looking straight ahead but without seeing anything, making me think I could see the wheels in his head spinning.

Nancy adjusted herself in her seat, obviously uncomfortable. After pulling her skirt down over her knees, she said, “Thanks for taking us home. I feel much better having a man around.”

“I’m just glad we can make sure you get home safely.” I placed my feet flat on the train’s floor.

There was an awkward silence as we reached the Summerhill station. After the doors closed, we prepared to get off at the next station. When the train continued on its way, we stood up and headed for the doors.

When they opened, we exited the train with the flow of people. Nancy, Dave, and I couldn’t help getting separated for a few minutes. When I turned around, Nancy and Dave were walking side-by-side. I waited for them to catch up.

“Can you hold a sec?” asked Nancy. “I want to get a magazine at the kiosk.”

“Sure,” I said.

While Dave and I watched Nancy walk off towards the kiosk, we waited for her by the escalator.

When we were alone, he asked, “You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m great. Just shook up about this serial killer thing.” My eyes met his and I hoped I looked worried.

“I’m glad I can help,” he said, leaning against the wall. “Would you like to go out for dinner?”

“Sure.” I was glad he offered. I was hoping he’d suggest that.

Dave smiled at me while his eyes glittered. He placed a hand on my arm, sliding it down until he reached my hand.

I was in love. He couldn’t look at me like that if he didn’t like me. “Where do you want to go?”

“There’s a new restaurant on Yonge a few blocks away. Are you up for a bit of a walk?” Dave swung my hand back and forth.
